I have been making mittens out of felted recycled wool sweaters since 2008. Inspired by a good friend, a bag of tiny, moth-nibbled, brightly-colored cashmere sweaters and a bolt of fleece, a Vermont mitten factory was born. Every pair is one of a kind, and artfully crafted to be both very warm and aesthetically pleasing. I take pride in creating practical, durable and beautiful winter wear. Besides mittens, I make fingerless gloves, leg warmers, hats and skirts all out of recycled materials. I never tire of matching colorful wools with buttons and yarn. I love creating something new out of something old, and wondering about the history of the materials. My favorite textiles are lambswool, Shetland, merino, cashmere, alpaca and angora. The best parts of the process are matching up fabrics (and buttons!), watching the finished mittens emerge from my initial conception, and seeing customers enjoy their mittens, year after year! I also do special orders and have been honored to create some "memorial mittens" in memory of someone special and made with a sweater that was worn by that person. I am excited to be joining the Putney Craft Tour and look forward to sharing my studio space with craft tour-goers!
